Hypertension and Diabetes

Hypertension, (high blood pressure), is often linked with diabetes of each type 1 and 2. It plays a high risk factor for strokes, heart attacks, and kidney failure. High blood pressure is more common in diabetic people more than non-diabetic people. The cause of why this happens more often in diabetics is not really understood.

Hypertension is an aggravator for blood vessel damage already present in diabetics. High blood pressure is also the cause for more serious complications of diabetes including heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. This is why it is important to treat high blood pressure aggressively before it causes these problems.

Diabetics as well as non-diabetics need to keep their blood pressure at 130/80 or below. This blood pressure reading target greatly reduces the chances of stroke and heart attack happening.

Blood pressure is actually the action of the heart pumping blood more than 93 miles of blood vessels. This process acts like a plumbing system, transporting the blood to your vital organs. You need a certain amount of pressure going within this system to keep the blood flowing . But when there is too much pressure, it will damage the blood vessels and thus they become narrow. This is where serious health problems will occur.

The top number of the blood pressure is the systolic pressure and is measuring the force on the blood vessel walls as the heart is contracting. The second lower number, diastolic, is the force on the vessel walls as the heart is relaxing. Blood pressure measurement itself is known as millimeters of mercury, (mm Hg).

A person's blood pressure is categorized in three ways. There is the normal, prehypertensive, or hypertensive. Stage 1 is the stage where blood pressure runs around 140/90 and up to 159/99. In stage 2, blood pressure is usually running around 160/100 or more. Blood pressure at that stage is very risky and needs to be treated as quickly as possible.

Your body has many ways of working with the blood pressure to be certain its organs, the brain especially, maintain the oxygen it needs to.

Types of high blood pressure are divided into two groups. Group one is known to be essential or primary. This is the group that has no real knwn cause, and the most common form. Group two is defined as secondary high blood pressure. This group has a cause, and can sometimes be curable if the cause is able to be corrected.

Many causes for primary hypertension are possible. The kidneys are number one. Kidneys have two main arteries, and when narrowed, the kidney transmits your blood pressure as being too low. The kidney then sends a signal out to raise the blood pressure, which causes hypertension. This is referred to by doctors as having renal artery hypertension. If the blocked artery to the kidney is opened, this usually corrects the problems.

Other causes for primary hypertension can be a possible thyroid problem you are having, and other hormonal factors. Contraceptives are also associated with high blood pressure, and smoking along with obesity is a problem that contributes to hypertensiveness.

So diabetics along with other non-diabetics should have their blood pressure taken on a regular basis. If you smoke, it really is best to quit since it does raise the blood pressure quite often. It is often known as the silent killer, and if left untreated, can lead to early death.

It is best to keep a blood pressure monitor at home so you can track your pressures on a daily basis. This helps you and your health care team to make the best treatment plan for you.
